Johannesburg Firsts by Anna Smith
Anna Smith was appointed chief librarian of the city in 1960 and from then on and throughout the 1970s she produced several excellent reference books on the city. This book is a fun way to absorb the history of Johannesburg. You'll find out who was the first bootmaker, the first hotel-keeper, the first district surgeon, and the first comedian, amongst many others. Also, when the first fire occurred in the town, when the first dog show happened, the first earth tremor, the first dry cleaning establishment, and the first horseshoe factory.
