There were efforts made to have the building declared a national monument but this was impossible without the consent of the owners. A committee was formed to conduct a survey of it, which concluded that because of the building's rare architectural features, it should be preserved.

The public started getting behind the campaign, with schoolchildren writing a letter to Foschini, and opposition party politicians urging the citizens of Johannesburg to stand up for their heritage. The Star newspaper became involved, and articles appeared urging its preservation.​
