Nelson Mandela spent most of his 27 years in jail on Robben Island. Two months before the life imprisonment sentence was passed in 1964, he delivered a three-hour address to the packed courtroom, entitled “I am prepared to die”. In 2001, thanks to the British Library’s National Sound Archive, which has one of the last surviving dictabelt machines able to render the speech audible, the historic speech is now available on audio.
