FORMER dancer and choreographer Clarence Swartland is working to create the atmosphere of his childhood home in Cape Town's District Six with dishes like smoorsnoek, bobotie, tomato bredie and denningvleis – and the best milk tart you're likely to find anywhere.

Swartland shares the cooking with long-time chef Sophie Links. The menu they produce is a mixture of boerekos and Cape Malay at the moment but they're planning to expand it because, says Swartland, there was a mix of people – and of cuisines – in the old District Six.

It's a small restaurant, vibrantly decorated with family photos and panama hats, and full every night and some lunchtimes, so booking is a good idea.
