All eyes were on the City of Johannesburg on Wednesday, 20 May 2026, as Executive Mayor of the City, Cllr Dada Morero delivered the State of the City Address (SOCA).
The SOCA was hosted at St Mary's Cathedral, placing Joburg's inner city at the centre of the City's vision for renewal and transformation. The proposed Archbishop Desmond Tutu Precinct represents a future built on heritage, accessibility, inclusion and vibrant public spaces.
The event commenced with a parade by the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and Emergency Management Services (EMS) outside the Metro Centre. Cllr Morero and Speaker of Council Cllr Margaret Arnolds saluted the law enforcement and EMS officials during the official flag raising ceremony.
During his SOCA address, Cllr Morero outlined the City's plans and priorities for the future of Johannesburg.
“This is the Joburg of our hearts desire, this is the Joburg, a city at work. We are building a city of golden opportunities. 2026 and beyond should be the Joburg we want to see. Enabling residents to live, play and work in the place they call home. This is our City, it's your City. Let us learn from our past and learn to continue to build a city for our grandchildren and great grandchildren."
His speech highlighted efforts to revitalise the inner city and plans for stricter revenue collection. “Revenue collected will be reinvested in infrastructure development," Cllr Morero said.
Cllr Morero also pointed to key achievements, including the official launch of the Brixton Reservoir and high-impact service delivery operations in the City. Future plans include the renaming of Lanseria Airport, inner city protection and greening initiatives, partnership funded projects, rental flats and renewable projects.
