Two familiar faces at the Blairgowrie Recreational Centre, in Region B, continue to serve and safeguard the community with dedication, commitment, and pride. Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) security officers Bonginkosi Ntombela and Mashudu Shivasa have become trusted figures at the recreational centre, where they work tirelessly to ensure the safety of residents and visitors.
Their dedication was recently highlighted when they helped reunite a missing 12-year-old boy with his mother after a late-night search. Officer Ntombela recalls that the incident took place in February while he and Officer Shivasa were on night shift duty at the centre. The officers reported for work at 18:00 expecting a routine shift, unaware that the evening would soon take an unexpected turn.
“A mother arrived looking for help because her son was missing," explained Ntombela. “We immediately understood the seriousness of the situation and knew we had to act quickly."

The officers responded without hesitation and worked alongside local security teams and community members to search for the child. For hours they assisted in looking through the surrounding area, determined to ensure the boy returned home safely.
Fortunately, their efforts paid off when the child was found safe in the vicinity and reunited with his relieved mother. Ntombela says the experience left a lasting impact on both officers and reminded them why they chose careers in law enforcement and public safety.
“We were very grateful when the child was found," he said. “Moments like these remind us why we became officers. It is our responsibility to protect the community and make sure people feel safe."
Between them, Ntombela and Shivasa have more than 15 years of combined service within the JMPD. They have not only protected public facilities but also built relationships with residents at the recreational centre. Their presence and willingness to assist have helped create a sense of trust and reassurance within the community.
For Shivasa, serving the community is also deeply personal. He says his role as a JMPD officer has allowed him to provide for his family while contributing positively to society. “This job allows me to take care of my family. I also know that the work we do makes a difference in people's lives."
Ntombela echoed the sentiment, saying his passion for the job comes from wanting to make communities safer and reduce crime. “With this job, I can support my family, and I want to minimise crime. We want residents to know that we are here to help and protect them."
