Hosted by the City of Johannesburg's Community Development Department through its Library and Information Services Directorate, the Fruit Words Scramble programme took place on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, at River Park Library. Children sharpened their spelling, vocabulary and problem-solving skills through a fun and educational activity designed to promote teamwork and healthy eating.

The programme challenged children to unscramble the names of different fruits, turning learning into an exciting game. As they worked through the puzzles, participants discovered new fruit names, improved their word recognition and learned about the importance of including fruits in a healthy diet.

The programme was a success, with children actively participating and gaining valuable knowledge throughout the activity. Beyond improving their spelling and vocabulary, the exercise encouraged them to think critically and find solutions by identifying the correct fruit names.

Facilitator Bridget Machaka said she was pleased to see the children laughing, enjoying themselves and participating enthusiastically while learning. Through the activity, they learned new fruit names and how to spell them correctly, strengthening their vocabulary and spelling skills.

The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development, Cllr Thapelo Amad, welcomed the initiative.

“Programmes such as Fruit Words Scramble demonstrate that learning can be both educational and enjoyable. Through creative activities, our libraries help children develop essential skills, build confidence and learn the value of teamwork. We remain committed to creating safe and welcoming spaces where young people can explore new ideas, develop their abilities and grow into confident individuals," said the MMC, Amad.
