The City of Johannesburg recently completed a series of stakeholder engagement sessions to help residents, businesses, property owners, and members of the media better understand the approved 2026/2027 municipal budget and tariff increases. The sessions took place on 9 and 10 June 2026 and formed part of the City's commitment to transparency, accountability, and customer education. Following the approval of the 2026/2027 Budget by Council, the City used these meetings to explain the reasons behind the tariff adjustments and how they will affect customers from 1 July 2026.
“Engaging with stakeholders is essential for building trust and understanding between the City and its customers. The purpose of the engagements is not only to communicate the approved changes but also to help customers understand the financial challenges facing the City and the shared responsibility required to maintain service delivery," said Director of Communications and Stakeholder Engagement, Kgamanyane Maphologela.

Representatives from the business sector, property industry, and media attended the sessions. City officials provided information on the main factors influencing municipal finances, including rising costs for bulk electricity and water purchases, the need to maintain and upgrade infrastructure, and the importance of ensuring the City's long-term financial sustainability.
The engagement sessions also built on the extensive public participation process that took place through the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) consultations. During these consultations, residents and stakeholders were invited to share their views on the proposed budget, service tariffs, and Property Rates Policy before the final budget was approved.
The approved average tariff increases that will come into effect on 1 July 2026 are:
- Electricity: 8.63%
- Water: 12.5%
- Sanitation: 11%
- Refuse Removal: 6.2%
- Property Rates: 3.6%
The City encourages customers to use available digital and customer service platforms, including the Customer Service Delivery (CSD) Mobile App, eJoburg, e-Services, Customer Service Centres, and approved banking channels. These platforms allow customers to access accounts, make payments, report service issues, update personal information, and receive important municipal updates.
The City also continues to support qualifying customers through programmes such as the Debt Relief Programme Phase 4 and the Expanded Social Package (ESP). Residents are encouraged to keep their accounts up to date, make payment arrangements when needed, and ensure their contact details are current. The approved tariffs and Property Rates Policy will officially take effect on 1 July 2026.
