Pikitup runs a number of programmes and projects: Project 100 Spots - the campaign is concerned with cleaning up illegal dumping sites, informing communities about the hazards of illegal dumping and encouraging them to take stewardship of these sites. Inner City Environmental Education Awareness Campaign - the project is part of the executive mayor's Clean and Green Campaign. Its main focus is to influence the behaviour of people in the inner city who continue to litter and dump waste illegally. Garden Composting Sites - compost is generated from garden refuse, and it can be bought at Ballyclare, Victory Park and Panorama compost plants. Lonehill Kerbside Recycling Programme - this is a pilot project of the Lonehill community to recycle waste at source. Bring Banks - all garden refuse sites are equipped with orange Bring Banks for the recycling of glass, paper, cans and plastic. Buy-Back Centres - waste materials with an economic value are bought from the community at these waste sorting facilities and resold to markets outside for a small profit. In addition to the benefits derived from recycling, the programme provides employment and entrepreneurial opportunities to the unemployed. The buy-back centres are privately operated but are supported by Pikitup Read more E-Waste Recycling Initiative - residents are now able to dispose of broken and unwanted computers, cellphones, microwaves and other electronic equipment at 25 Pikitup garden sites across the city. Read more Oil Recycling - The Rose Foundation, in partnership with Pikitup, manages the environmentally acceptable collection, storage and recycling of used lubricating oil in South Africa. Read more
