The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport, Cllr. Kenny Kunene, will kick off the 2024 October Transport Month 2024 (OTM24) on October 1, 2024, with the theme “DOING MORE TOGETHER: FOR UNIVERSAL ACCESSIBILITY TO PUBLIC TRANSPORT." This month-long celebration will include events designed to engage the community, improve public transport services, and highlight advancements in mobility.

This year marks the 19th anniversary of the campaign, coinciding with the country's celebration of 30 years of democracy. OTM24 focuses on addressing the challenges of transport on our roads, launch of new projects and promotion of public transport.

In the City of Johannesburg, OTM24 aims to raise awareness about the vital role all modes of transport play in the economy and service delivery, encouraging participation from civil society and businesses. The goal is to promote a safer, more affordable, accessible, and reliable public transport system.

The City of Johannesburg's OTM24 activities will be led by various departments, including the Transport Department, Metrobus, Rea Vaya, the Metropolitan Trading Company (MTC), and the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA). The Roads and Transport department will collaborate with sister departments, such as the Environmental Infrastructure Service Department (EISD) and the Joburg Development Agency, along with other spheres of government.

Activities to be launched by MMC Kunene include the Metrobus “Goez Cashless" initiative and a partnership with the private sector for traffic signal backup power supply. The JRA will hold a wreath-laying ceremony for road maintenance staff who lost their lives in the line of duty. In preparation for the rainy season, the JRA will continue with maintenance work on freeways and within communities to ensure safe roads, clear markings, and restored infrastructure to prevent flooding. Additionally, MMC Kunene will inaugurate the Vlakfontein Transport facility and the Randburg Taxi Holdings. To conclude the month's activities, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will officially open the Maphumulo Bridge in Soweto on 7thOctober 2024.

Cllr. Kenny Kunene emphasizes, “October Transport Month is a chance for us to unite and envision the future of transportation. We are excited to showcase the innovations that will lead us toward a more sustainable and efficient future. This month is not just about celebrating progress but also about educating the public on the importance of sustainable and smart mobility solutions."

MMC Kunene invites the City, residents, civil society, businesses, and the media to participate in this year's October Transport Month.

END.
