Community members in Orange Farm, Joburg’s southernmost suburb, have started a small-scale farming project to promote agricultural education, food security, and domestic economic development.
Founded and managed by Tim Abaa, the community farming project includes a makeshift nursery where seedlings and flowers are grown, as well as the breeding of bees, chickens, ducks, and pigeons. It was inspired by Orange Farm’s remoteness from the Inner City and Abaa’s passion to bridge the socioeconomic divide for food costs.
The project has fostered relationships with other food security initiatives, including the University of Johannesburg’s run Izindaba Zokudla, and facilitates knowledge sharing sessions for agricultural practices to benefit local youth, schools, and NGOs.
