Two hundred and fifty residents of Johannesburg became first-time homeowners when the City of Johannesburg handed them title deeds.
After years of renting in backyard rooms or living in informal settlements, the residents where given title deeds to properties in Lufhereng Extension 5 and 6, near Soweto.
Lufhereng is one of the City’s biggest integrated housing developments, characterised by the provision and integration of various land uses and numerous housing opportunities for mixed-income households.
The Member of the Mayoral Committee responsible for Housing, Councillor Mlungisi Mabaso, said: “It was a dream come true for the new homeowners, some of whom say they had almost lost hope after years of renting and living in informal settlements. I acknowledge that the City is faced with a huge housing backlog, but I urge residents in poorer communities to be patient as the municipality strives to provide more housing opportunities. The provision of adequate homes is an integral part of achieving the City’s strategic developmental goals.”
One of the beneficiaries, Thembi Ngcongo, 74, expressed delight after receiving her title deed.
“I did not know that one day when I depart this world, I would do so in a decent home in my name. I thought I would die at an informal settlement. Thank you so much for this gift (title deed), it means a lot to me and you have now given me hope to live longer.”
Another beneficiary, Daniel Seate, 79, said he and his wife were excited to finally own a home.
“Owning our home is a great feeling. We are very pleased that we now have this title deed. Thank you to all those who have worked tirelessly to ensure that I see this moment in my lifetime,” said Seate.
