The City of Joburg’s Health department is appealing to residents of Alexandra to allow services in all its clinics to continue, following a total shutdown of the township by aggrieved residents.

Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Health and Social Development in the City of Joburg, Dr Mpho Phalatse is appealing to residents to not only allow clinic operations to continue uninterrupted, but says staff and patients should be protected from the ongoing protests.

Alexandra is under total lockdown with residents complaining about lack of service delivery from all spheres of government. Staff at the City of Joburg’s clinics have been rerouted and placed at Pennyville, Wendywood and Sandown clinics nearby Alexandra to continue offering health care services to the community.

MMC Phalatse said it was important to continue offering healthcare despite the ongoing protests in the area.

“I need to remind everyone behind this shutdown that health is an essential service and should be insulated from these kind of activities. Residents of Alex have every right to access uninterrupted healthcare. It’s enshrined in our constitution and no one should take that right away from residents,” Phalatse said.

City of Joburg clinics affected by the protest include Riverpark, Thoko Mngoma, Eastbank and 8th Avenue. The City commits to offering full healthcare services as soon as the situation normalises in the area.
