Yesterday, 7 August 2019, I undertook a walkabout at the Riverside View Housing Project in Diepsloot to assess the progress made to this critical development.
I am pleased to reveal that the development of Riverside View is at an advanced stage as all town planning works have been completed with all townships finalised and approved. The current approved contract duration will end 26 October 2021 and the development is being implemented through a number of phases due to the magnitude of bulk link and internal infrastructure required.
There are 1 480 RDP units under construction and the anticipated completion date will be at the end of the 2019/20 financial year.
The construction of a bridge that extends over the Juskei River also forms part of the development. This component of the project commenced in October 2018 and the anticipated completion date is November 2019.
The majority of civil bulk, link and internal infrastructure has been completed to date and the electrical works for approximately sixty percent of the development has been put in place with the remainder being rolled out.
This project has brought attention to the significance and meaning of integration within the context of South Africa. Integrated residential developments have redefined the socio-spatial landscape of the built environment by improving the quality of the design of housing.
As the political head for this portfolio, I can confidently assert that this integrated development has all the markings of what constitutes a sustainable human settlement.
As we progressively heed the call for socially inclusive communities, the only way this can be achieved is through the social and spatial integration of our City.
The Department of Housing remains committed towards integrating the urban poor and low-income families into social structures that would empower them upwards in the economic ladder.
This pro-poor multiparty government have the needs of the residents at heart and we will continue to endeavor to provide frequent updates on critical projects like these.
