In celebration of Women’s Month the City of Johannesburg’s MMC of Public Safety, Cllr Micheal Sun, hosted a day of pampering, inspiration and motivation for the women of Bethany Home in Bertrams, east of Johannesburg, on 27 August 2019.
The home, which accommodates 49 women and children who have survived extreme physical and psychological abuse, was transformed into a beauty parlour for the day.
The ladies were treated to manicures, pedicures, massages and a makeover which included new hair-do and make-up.
The pamper session was followed by inspirational stories from the women on how they survived abuse and how Bethany home has assisted them to get back on their feet.
The MMC followed with a motivational talk regarding overcoming trials and not letting the hardships of life discourage the women towards their destiny. He related a story of a marble statue and how, through many hours of being chiselled, it becomes a work of art for all to admire.
“Your stories of hardship prove that you are not just survivors but victors, you have been chiselled by life’s hardships and have conquered,” MMC said.
MMC committed the Department of Public Safety’s partnership with the home, ensuring that the women receive training in basic first aid and firefighting skills. This would add on to the other skills that Bethany home offers the ladies which include bead work and sewing.
The Department is honoured to have celebrated Women’s Month through this act of appreciation and support. We will continue to celebrate all women across the country every day, both within the department through continued opportunities and in our communities where we serve and protect.
