On Saturday, 17 August 2019, the Executive Mayor, Cllr Herman Mashaba, the MMC for Group Corporate and Shared Services (GCSS), Cllr Ntombi Khumalo, the Chairperson of Section 79 for GCSS, Cllr John Mendelsohn, and Cllr Lydia Ledwaba, of the EFF, will celebrate the continuation of the City’s insourcing programme, by welcoming 450 cleaners to be insourced by the City of Johannesburg.

This marks the start of the insourcing of a total of 1 879 cleaners, most of which are women, who will benefit greatly from employee benefits like a pension, medical aid, and an increased take home salary – ending a reliance on tenderpreneurs who have exploited workers for years.

The empowerment of women is a particularly momentous achievement as we celebrate Women’s Month in our country.

These cleaners previously earned a mere R3000 per month, while the City paid around R6500 per cleaner to the outsourced companies they worked for. These cleaners will now be able to take home over R4000 a month after deductions of a salary of around R5600 a month.

In addition, the insourcing initiative will also ensure stable and predictable payment of salaries for these employees – a standard practice which was allegedly sorely missing under their previous employers.

Through this insourcing programme, we are giving real dignity to women who have been the subject of exploitation for decades.

The insourcing of cleaners follows the successful insourcing of security guards, which has brought dignity to close to 4000 families. It is this dignity that our cleaners have previously been denied.

The details of the event are as follows:

Date: 17 August 2019
