On Monday, 2 September 2019, the Executive Mayor, Cllr Herman Mashaba, and the MMC for Economic Development, Cllr Leah Knott, will launch the start of the R144 million Mandela Market expansion project.
This sod-turning event marks the start to a critical upgrade to South Africa’s biggest fresh produce market.
The Mandela Market, which totals around R250 million annual purchasing, is an informal satellite market on the Joburg Market's City Deep property. This figure is expected to increase after the expansion.
The Mandela Market currently provides 71 informal traders with the opportunity to generate their own income, often allowing them to educate their children or to buy a house. After the upgrades are complete, an additional 28 stall will be created.
Apart from creating new business opportunities, there are a number of entrepreneurial opportunities that will be created as well where the Joburg Market can facilitate the capacitation and up skilling of a number of the tenants. This is critical to achieve a 5% economic growth in Johannesburg.
The details of the event are as follows:
Date: 2 September 2019
Time: 10:00
Venue: Joburg Market, 4 Fortune Road,
City Deep, Johannesburg
There will be opportunities for members of the media to take photographs and conduct interviews.
