On Thursday, 24 January 2019, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Finance in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Funzela Ngobeni, learnt with great shock and regret that Council officials in Rabie Ridge, Ivory Park, Ebony Park and Mayibuye were threatened this morning following violent protests in the area.
Furthermore, City officials were instructed and forcefully removed from their offices by protestors who entered the building, demanding that services be discontinued for the day amid the protests.
It is believed that the main reason behind these violent behaviour is the demand for houses in the area.
Business has been suspended for the day as management is attending to the issues of safety concerning our employees. Should the matter persist tomorrow, revenues services will be suspended in the abovementioned four paypoints while officials will be dispatched to other offices within the Region. Following this unacceptable behavior, officials have been released for their own safety.
“We cannot put the lives of our staff members at stake. We understand the frustration behind the demands, however, violent behaviour is never a solution,” said Ngobeni.
We will keep customers updated on progress regarding this matter.
The City of apologises for any inconvenience caused.
