The MMC for Housing, Councillor Meshack Van Wyk, acknowledges receipt of the public statement made by the Premier of Gauteng, Mr David Makhura with regards to the status of hostels in Alexandra.
MMC Van Wyk would like to put on record that his portfolio has established a public stock directorate focused on the repairs and maintenance. Currently, there are plans being developed for the refurbishment and planned maintenance of all housing stock under the portfolio.
The first phase of the refurbishments of public stock includes the appointment of professional teams who will be undertaking the assessment of the structural integrity of the buildings and to assess the supply of services. The plan for hostels includes the redevelopment of precincts within which the hostels are located.
One of the priorities of the Office of the MMC included the redevelopment and refurbishment of public stock. As part of the MMC’s oversight programme there was a scheduled visit to hostels in Alexandra for the 29th of January 2019 which had to be postponed due to the unavailability of Ward Councillors from the area. The purpose of the visit was precisely to do oversight at Helen Joseph Woman’s Hostel and Madala Hostel.
The MMC will however reschedule the site visit to another date, as overseeing upkeep of hostels within City of Johannesburg remains a key priority.
