The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Herman Mashaba together with the MMC for Transport, Councillor Nonhlanhla Makhuba today visited the M1 Double Decker section to assess progress of the rehabilitation project by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).
The construction period for the repair works on the M1 Double Decker Bridge is aimed at 22 months. Work commenced on the 5th February 2018 and the estimated completion date is the 4th December 2019.
The scope for the project includes the maintenance and rehabilitation of the M1 double decker bridge with a total length of 1.02km and is situated on the M1 between Newtown and Fordsburg in Johannesburg. The existing bridge consists of two reinforced concrete deck superstructures, directly above each other, supported on trestle like piers. The works also include rehabilitation of the following:
• Asphalt Surfacing
• Bridge Parapets
• Expansion joints
• Bearings
• Concrete members in the super and substructures
• Drainage Systems
• Road signs
This follows constant issues of flooding due to due to inadequate storm-water infrastructure as well as vandalised bridge parapet rails.
“The safety of road users is our priority as the JRA and the City of Johannesburg, hence the constant inspections, maintenance and rehabilitation of our bridge infrastructure,” said JRA Acting Managing Director, Siya Nodu.
Mayor Mashaba said: “I’m very pleased to see that the rehabilitation of the M1 Bridge is progressing well, and should even be completed ahead of schedule. The contractual date of completion is December 2019, however the service provider has revised the completion date to end of August 2019. As we have said before, we have taken difficult decisions to close many of our roads and bridges for maintenance work because failure to do so leaves our motorists at risk because of imminent collapse. The safety of our road users is our foremost priority.”
The total cost of the project is estimated to be R113 million – with R93 million spent to date. Pleasingly, R15 million of the spend was directed at SMMEs.
The JRA is a City-owned agency responsible for the maintenance, repair and development of Johannesburg’s road network and storm water infrastructure, including bridges and culverts, traffic lights and signage. The organisation is committed to providing quality roads that are accessible, safe and liveable for our communities.
