Twenty suspects are expected appear in court today following their arrest during a City of Joburg raid of four suspected hijacked properties in Hillbrow, yesterday.
The properties raided include 34 and 35 Bok Street, 41 Quartz Street and 75 Wolmarans Street.
Among the arrested were two suspects who were wanted for murder, two for being in possession of illegal substances, one was in possession of stolen property, and one for being in possession of a dangerous weapon.
A total of 14 undocumented persons were also arrested during the operation.
The operation was led by the City's Group Forensic and Investigation Service (GFIS) department, which worked alongside the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).
To date 44 hijacked properties have been handed back to their rightful owners. About 643 properties are confirmed as hijacked in the City.
The City will not leave any stone unturned when dealing with criminal activities within its area of jurisdiction and we will continue to intensify the raids at these bad and hijacked properties with the assistance of SAPS and other law enforcement agencies.
We are committed to ensuring that we stop the rot in our inner city and make it a prosperous and inclusive place for our people to live work and play.
I would like to encourage people to report any fraud and corruption activities through our 24hour tipoff hotline 0800 002 587 or visit the offices of GFIS situated at 48 Ameshoff Street, Braamfontein.
