Two City Power contractors have been sentenced to 2 years imprisonment or pay a R20 000 fine each after appearing in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court.
Hamilton Seroke and Mangaliso Ngobeni were arrested for soliciting a bride of R6500 from a residents in Wilropark, West of Johannesburg. They pleaded guilty to the charges.
The pair was employed by Mbawula Technical Services and were contracted by City Power to conduct electricity disconnection services.
Seroke and Ngobeni approached the resident and introduced themselves as officials from the City. They told the resident that his electricity meter belonged to another house in Ruimsig and that it was supposed to be a three phase meter.
They then threatened to disconnect the resident’s electricity supply or that he pays them R6500.
I advise residents to report these bogus officials claiming to represent City Power or Johannesburg Water to the City’s Group Forensic and Investigation Service Department (GFIS).
I commend the resident who refused to be part of any corrupt activity and reported the matter to our team.
Corruption has no place in this administration and we will work tirelessly, and in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, to ensure that the residents of Johannesburg receive the quality services they deserve.
I would also like to encourage people to report any fraud and corruption activities through our 24hour tipoff hotline 0800 002 587 or visit the GFIS offices situated at 48 Ameshoff Street in Braamfontein.
