Five arrested during inner-city raids
28 March 2019 Release: Immediate
Five suspects were arrested this morning during raids targeting hijacked buildings in Hillbrow and Berea, and have been detained at the Hillbrow Police Station, where they will be formally charged.
They will subsequently appear in court imminently.
The raids, which were led by the City of Joburg’s Group Forensics and Investigations Service (GFIS) team, visited four properties, where between two of those, two men were arrested for possession of drugs, two for not possessing identity documentation, and another was arrested for fraud.
No arrests were made at the other two properties, however, GFIS officials are continuing with investigations.
The operation was led by GFIS in conjunction with the Johannesburg East Cluster South African Police Service (SAPS) and Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).
It is essential that we bring back the rule of law in our City and take it back from the criminal elements such as landlords who take advantage of desperate people and house them under deplorable conditions. These are conditions we do not want our children to grow up under. We are committed to ensuring that we stop the rot in our inner city and make it a prosperous and inclusive place for our people to live work and play.
I would like to encourage people to report any fraud and corruption activities through our 24hour tipoff hotline 0800 002 587 or visit the offices of GFIS situated at 48 Ameshoff Street, Braamfontein.
