The City of Johannesburg has, through the Library and Information Services Directorate, been commemorating Africa month through various programmes and activities at libraries across all its seven regions.
Young library goers have been taught how to sing the South African National Anthem, been treated to African folktales, E-Learning: Online quiz about African cultures as well as African story times in Afrikaans, isiXhosa, isiZulu and SeSotho. There was even a debate followed by a quiz on African facts – among other fun activities.
The month of May celebrates the achievements made in the development of Africa, as well as the cultural diversity and unity of the African people – and what better way to celebrate than teaching our children about different African cultures, languages and traditional practices?
As Africa Month culminates on Africa Day on the 25th of May 2019, our libraries will be hosting additional activities in celebration. Furthermore, various libraries will do displays emphasizing the many books available in libraries on the subject of Africa, its heritage, and its uniqueness.
