Today, 14 May 2019, the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Herman Mashaba, handed over R840 000 to the Soweto Country Club to upgrade the facilities.
The money emanates from fundraising efforts from the Mayoral Charity Golf Day.
The refurbishment of the golf course, which started in February 2018 is still ongoing. The course was designed by South Africa’s internationally renowned golf legend, Gary Player, as part of the overall Soweto Country Club upgrade project.
The refurbishment project has thus far provided the country club with a new clubhouse, practice facility, conference centre and halfway house. It now has more bunkers to make the game more exciting. The completion of the most recent upgrades positions the course alongside the country’s top courses.
As of today, the facility has network and telephone connectivity. Members of the public are starting to show interest in this facility as bookings are being received for weddings, parties and conferences.
Significant strides have been made to ensure that Soweto establishes a landmark of this calibre. However, there is still more work to be done in the medium and long term planning.
These plans include building a driving range and other interesting features which currently do not exist.
I look forward to seeing the completion of the project plan. The development of Soweto Country Club forms part of the City’s efforts to bolster investment for the benefit of township communities so they too have access to such facilities.
