I would like to congratulate the City of Johannesburg’s Joburg Market for winning the prestigious Shiny Red Apple Award which recognises excellence in the fresh produce industry.

Through the annual Awards, the Institute for Market Agents of South Africa (IMASA) honour individuals, business, market and market agencies who made a significant contribution through customer service, communication, upliftment, transformation and innovation.

We are pleased that the City’s efforts of improving conditions at the Joburg Market are being recognised. It is an affirmation that we are on the right path. The Joburg Market is important in achieving the economic objective of the City and we are indeed ecstatic that the industry is taking notice.

IMASA’s national office awarded the prestigious accolade in recognition of Joburg Market’s consistent efforts of investing in improving facilities and conditions for agents, the market community and for many other stakeholders. The organization also lauded the market for upgrading exit gates and the People’s Market precinct. IMASA also lauded the Market for running efficient safety and cleanliness initiatives.

Recently the City launched the R144 million People’s Market project. The market, which totals around R250 million annual purchasing, is an informal satellite market that forms part of the Joburg Market, the largest fresh produce market in South Africa and all of Africa by volume and value.

I would like to thank the Chief Executive Officer of the Market, Ayanda Kanana, and the team for their dedication in ensuring the success of the market. We recognise your passion and dedication and look forward to witnessing more great work in the future.

We welcome remarks made by the president of IMASA, Attie Horn, who applauded the Market for being a role model in the industry. He commented that IMASA looks forward to continue working together to improve fresh produce markets.

“Joburg Market has timeously and consistently communicated with IMASA, tenants and other role players, in a massive effort to move as one, under challenging conditions’’ he added.
