It is anticipated that about 300 waste pickers will benefit from the donations.
The current COVID-19 shutdown period has adversely affected waste pickers because buy-back centers, which are places where they sell their recyclables, are not operating at this stage due to the lockdown. This therefore makes it difficult for waste pickers to make a living. Their plight is compounded by yesterday’s court decision that declared their services non-essential.
It should be noted that waste pickers play a crucial role in assisting the City of Joburg and Pikitup to reduce waste that is disposed at landfill sites.
Members of the media are invited to the event.
