Johannesburg - As part of the Welcome to Joburg – A City Reimagined campaign, Joburg Tourism recently marked the start of the holiday season with festive flashmob activities around the city on 15 December. This was to highlight some of the essential or must do excursions available for staycationers and explorers alike in the City of Gold.
The group of young dancers set off in a Metrobus in the early hours of Tuesday from the transport exchange hub at the Sandton Gautrain Station, followed by a stop at the bustling Jabulani Mall on Bolani Road, Jabulani in Soweto – ending the festivities with a bang at Sakhumzi's Restaurant on Vilakazi Street in Orlando West, Soweto.
The City's MMC for Economic Development, Cllr Lawrence Khoza, looked on with delight as the dancers surprised Sakhumzi's Restaurant patrons with a medley of dance moves from modern to jazz, including some impressive gymnastic moves. MMC Khoza then unveiled festive season tourism activities to be enjoyed in Joburg, in line with the Welcome to Joburg - A City Reimagined campaign.
As he wished locals and visitors a blessed and safe festive season, MMC Khoza emphasized that Joburg is a city worth exploring and experiencing, while adhering to COVID-19 safety protocols at all times.
“Today is about illustrating what Joburg has to offer, highlighting township tourism in a bid to re-ignite, revitalise and restart the local tourism sector post the pandemic hard lockdown. “As you would know the action in Joburg certainly never stops and when the work is over, we encourage our resident locals and visitors to stay, play and enjoy what Joburg has to offer during the holiday season," he said.
The MMC added that there were a range of attractions and activities on offer – from shopping for gifts at quirky Christmas markets or high-end malls (offering extended shopping hours), to just kicking back to enjoy a magical evening out under the stars, spectacular lighting festivals (like the Festival of Lights hosted at the Zoo) and catching some outdoor music, while picnicking on well-manicured lawns, set against the backdrop of Highveld Koppies.
The Welcome to Joburg - A City Reimagined digital campaign was launched in August 2020 on social media multiple platforms to keep Joburg top of mind when the country slowly started to open up post the hard lockdown, due to the global pandemic. It attracted 1 538 355 million views is its first week of going live and continues to be viewed globally.
