A taxi owner affiliated to the DORJOTA taxi association was arrested yesterday after offering a bribe of R25 000 to City officials.

It is alleged that the City officials were conducting Operation Kleena Joburg, which was led by MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD) Mpho Moerane last week in Roodepoort when they first had an encounter with the suspect.

During the operation it was established the suspect's property had illegally connected the power supply.  It is alleged that the suspect then offered the officials R25 000 to avoid disconnection.  He then paid R5000 to a technician on site and his electricity was reconnected.

The City's Group Forensic and Investigation Department (GFIS) was contacted in order to assist with the entrapment in terms of section 252A of the CPA.  The GFIS team then contacted the provincial office of the Hawks and a sting operation was set up.

The suspect brought a further R3500 yesterday as part of the outstanding balance and he was arrested on the spot.

He is expected to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court today where he will be officially charged.

The City would like to commend the officials who refused to be part of any corrupt activity and reported the matter.

Corruption has no place in the City of Johannesburg and the City will work tirelessly, and in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, to ensure that the residents of Johannesburg receive the quality services they deserve.

The City would also like to encourage people to report any fraud and corruption activities through our 24hour tipoff hotline 0800 002 587 or visit the GFIS offices situated at 48 Ameshoff Street in Braamfontein.
