The MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Mpho Moerane, will visit three projects as part of the City’s celebration of the World Environment Day on Friday, 5 June 2020.
The visits form part of celebrations of the World Environment Week, which encourages worldwide awareness and action to protect the environment.
Activities on the day will include a site visit to one of the City’s projects being undertaken to preserve and protect biodiversity, inspection of an old illegal dumping site that has been cleaned up and earmarked to be converted into a public park and a tree-planting ceremony.
This year’s World Environment Day will be celebrated under the theme ‘Biodiversity’, which makes a plea for urgent action to protect biodiversity. It also puts the spotlight on nature, with the emphasis on restoring the relationship between humans and nature.
The City will join communities and individuals around the world as it works to increase awareness on the importance of conserving the environment and engage in activities that serve to educate and improve the environment.
Celebrations this year come at a time when the world is facing the novel Covid-19 pandemic. The emergence of this virus has brought about a consciousness for the role that nature plays in our daily lives.
The City remains committed to contributing to global efforts in biodiversity conservation. Such efforts include ongoing River Clean-Ups; Rehabilitation of Rivers and Alien Vegetation Control to name a few. These initiatives also create much-needed job opportunities for the City’s residents.
