The Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr. Geoffery Makhubo, on behalf of the City joins millions of Africans in celebrating Africa Day under the theme: “Silencing The Guns: Creating Conducive Conditions for Africa’s Development and Intensifying the Fight against the COVID-19 Pandemic”.

Africa Day acknowledges the successes of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the precursor of the AU, formed on May 25, 1963.

The mission of the OAU was to fight against colonialism and apartheid.

It set to reflect on the progress that Africa has made, while reflecting upon the common challenges that the continent faces in a global environment.

"This year we celebrate this day differently as we are faced with a global pandemic. However, we are truly encouraged by the leadership displayed during this difficult period to fight COVID-19 by all African leaders. The work done in our African countries to curb the spread of COVID-19 is remarkable and should be commended,” said Mayor Makhubo.

“The collaboration by African countries witnessed during this pandemic definitely strengthens Africa’s interventions to contain and manage the spread of COVID-19. The pandemic has formed a unified Africa through working together,” the Mayor added.

“As a World Class Africa City, I encourage all residents to continue to show Ubuntu and work together to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Let us continue to celebrate and embrace each other’s cultures, history and promote a peaceful City and continent. A unified Africa is what is needed during these unprecedented times,” Mayor Makhubo concluded.

“We are Africans not because we are born in Africa, but because Africa is born in us.” - Kwame Nkrumah.
