The City of Johannesburg will join hundreds of international cities to celebrate International White Cane Day (IWCD) on Thursday 15 October 2020.
IWCD is celebrated worldwide on 15 October every year with the objective of educating people all over the globe about blindness and how the visually impaired can live and work independently while making meaningful contributions to society.
In support of this event and Blind SA in particular Johannesburg will be running a social media campaign that highlights the universal accessibility of Metro Bus, Rea Vaya and its public transport infrastructure for visually impaired people.
The intention is to promote patronage of these busses as easily accessible and safe. Rea Vaya and Metro busses are designed to accommodate people living with disabilities.
Messaging will highlight the importance of the white cane as a tool of independence for people with low vision or blindness. It is an instantly recognisible indication to give adequate space to someone using a white cane so that they can navigate safely in any environment.
