The City of Joburg’s MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD) Cllr Mpho Moerane led the second leg of the new Accelerated Service Delivery campaign in Zola North, Soweto, yesterday.
The campaign, which was launched last week by the City’s Mayor, Cllr Jolidee Matongo, in downtown Johannesburg, was rebranded from the previously named 120 Days of Service Delivery campaign, which had successfully launched earlier in the year following the relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions.
Zola North had earlier in the year been the site of the #KleenaJoburg Reloaded campaign, which is another leg of the Accelerated Service Delivery campaign.
Joining the MMC were his departmental stakeholders, Joburg Water, Pikitup, City Power, JRA and community members. The clean-up focused on waste collection, removing illegal dumping and attending to vandalised infrastructure in the area and surrounding suburbs. The team removed dirt and grime and illegally dumped waste on pavements, street corners as well as close to business premises.
Joburg Water officials also tackled water leakages, water metres with stolen valves, and those that were vandalised. JRA was also on hand to repaint street markings in the area, while City Power attended to faulty street-lights. Most of the street lights could not be fixed immediately as they were found to have been affected by the trees that are standing alongside them. Residents complained that most of the lights have not been working for a long time, and some are posing a danger to the children due to sparks that emit from some of them.
The lights were either encroached by growing trees at the top or by the trees’ roots underground. City Parks and Zoo officials were on hand to explain that they are aware of the problem posed by the trees and were working on a solution, as some of the trees’ roots were growing into adjacent houses’ foundations.
MMC Moerane did a walkabout with the entities and assisted in the clearing of illegal dumping sites. The campaign is set to continue in the area until all issues are addressed.
Green Village Vaccination site visit
Following the successful service delivery relaunch in Zola North, the MMC visited the mobile Covid-19 vaccination site in Green Village near Protea North. He was encouraged to find the place being a hive of activity, with locals queueing to register and receive their Covid-19 vaccines. He said this is a crucial part of government’s fight against the pandemic, and he was encouraged to see the City’s residents taking it upon themselves to contribute to the fight by voluntarily getting the vaccine.
Background
The #KleenaJoburg Reloaded campaign assumed an integrated services delivery approach where the City’s entities join forces to render a variety of services. Introduced in late 2019, the campaign’s official launch was interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic and its lockdown restrictions. Following the lifting of some of the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, the campaign was relaunched as #KleenaJoburg Reloaded, due to specifications and guidelines of the Covid-19 safety precautions.
Regional launches:
The #KleenaJoburg Reloaded campaign started in Region A at the Boulders Shopping centre in Midrand in August 2020, where clean-up operations included clamping down on businesses that were operating illegally, clean-up operations and health and wellness awareness campaign, among others. The campaign then moved to Region E in Alexandra, again in Region A in Ivory Park, then back at The Boulders shopping centre in Region A. It then launched in Yeoville, before moving to Region D in Diepkloof on October 12, followed by Emndeni in October. The campaign continued in the surrounding regions till the end of the year. It resumed at the beginning of the year in different regions, until it returned to the inner City in April, and later in Zola North and other areas in Soweto.
The campaign was relaunched as Accelerated Service Delivery campaign earlier this month by the Mayor, Cllr Jolidee Matongo.
