The Greater Lanseria Master Plan (GLMP) which is a South African Presidential project was tabled and endorsed at the 47th Ordinary Council Meeting held on the 25th March 2021.

The proposed intention with the Lanseria Smart City project is to guide the way towards innovative ways of approaching economic drivers in the area. It seeks to transcend the “digital divide”, contribute towards the creation of a new regional city node which will result in the attraction of investments and provide a conducive environment for job creation and opportunities for communities in and around the Lanseria area.

The Lanseria area represents one of the most significant regional development opportunities in Gauteng and provides an opportunity to create the first genuine post-apartheid urban node in South Africa at scale.

The Presidency, the Office of the Gauteng Premier and the constituent municipalities (Mogale City, City of Johannesburg and City of Tshwane), together with the adjacent municipality of Madibeng in North West Province, embarked on a cooperative planning venture to deliver the; Lanseria Smart City’ initiative: a post-apartheid, publicly-led plan that enables the private sector and communities to build an urban economy as a basis for a truly integrated city, socially, economically and culturally.

The Greater Lanseria Master Plan envisages encompassing key critical aspects of development, which includes Sustainable Environmental Development to ensure the conservation of natural capital within the identified area, allowing for Integrated Human Settlements, Sustainable Economic growth as a catalyst towards job creation and the enablement of the Smart City Initiative which forms part of the City’s Government of Local Unity (GLU)’s key strategic priorities.

The agreed recommendations endorsed by Council included Council support for Lanseria Masterplan as a policy instrument and that the City of Johannesburg Spatial Development Framework (SDF) be amended to reflect the master plan pertaining to the Johannesburg municipal area.

The proposed intention with the Lanseria Smart City project is communicated to the public through the integrated development plan (IDP) communications process.
