City of Joburg MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD) Cllr Mpho Moerane has unveiled new plans aimed at addressing the water challenges currently being experienced by the City’s suburbs.

Over the next 48 months, Johannesburg Water plans to address the protracted water infrastructure vulnerabilities affecting the Hurst Hill, Brixton and Crosby reservoirs and towers.

In the pipeline are plans for a new connection from Rand Water to supplement water supply to the Crosby Reservoir; a new booster pump station and associated pipe work in Hurst Hill; and the construction of a new reservoir and tower in Brixton. Work has already commenced and at design stage for all three projects.

To realise these objectives, the City of Johannesburg plans to invest over R330 million in support of Johannesburg Water’s short- and long-term plans to build a more resilient water infrastructure for Brixton, Hurst Hill and Crosby reservoirs and towers.

In an endeavour to ease current water supply and pressure challenges, Rand Water and Johannesburg Water have made operational changes with a positive effect in increasing water flow and pressure to the reservoirs and towers, thus ensuring consistent supply to residents, businesses and hospitals.

In addition, the entity is building new water and sewer infrastructure across the seven regions of the City, with a new pump station and elevated water tower under construction at Crown Gardens; a vast water and sewer pipe replacement project in Parkmore; and another one in Orange Farm, all nearing completion.

Water resources continue to be threatened due to climate and environmental changes. Johannesburg Water pleads with residents to use water sparingly and help by not polluting and putting foreign objects on the sewer and storm infrastructure.
