Member of the Mayoral Committee for Housing in the City of Joburg, Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso visited Fleurhof power station to monitor progress.

The substation, being a first of its kind in Africa, was scheduled for completion in October this year. However, this has been delayed due to COVID-19. It is now expected to be completed by June next year. However, there are interim measures taken to power up the already built units in order to allocate houses in the near future.

The substation will benefit residents from mid-next year since 70 percent of the work is already completed. It has capacity to provide electricity to the whole of Fleurhof and a further 20 thousand more units still to be built in the area.

Cllr Mabaso said “I am encouraged by the work already completed. It will benefit people who will be allocated to the houses in Fleurhof.”

The structure of this substation, a first for the continent, will drastically reduce cable theft which is rife in South Africa since the bulk of the extensive electrical equipment is housed in secure containers. These structures are common in largely developed countries.

Ends.
