The City of Johannesburg has approved an increase of over R69 million a year for employees who use their vehicles daily to deliver vital services throughout the city.
The extreme petrol price increases has hit employees’ pockets hard, but with this increase in their locomotion allowances employees such as urban and building inspectors (who were only able to go out once a week) will now be able to increase their field visits to monitor and ensure compliance with the City’s bylaws.
In line with the priorities of the Executive Mayor, Cllr Mpho Phalatse, to make Johannesburg a well-run city that gets the basics right, we are committed to supporting our employees so that they are enabled to deliver quality services to residents. This is especially the case for the various inspectors in the city who are responsible for health, environmental health, water quality, air quality, building control, and land use management. We have also identified other critical support functions which are vital to effective service delivery in the City.
The locomotion allowances are now aligned to the current SARS tables, which reflect the dramatic increases in the petrol price. We had constructive engagement with unions whose members have been frustrated over the City’s lack of action for a number of years and committed to implementing the increased allowance to certain categories of employees (critical service and critical support functions) based on budget availability. We will continue to review all categories of employees who receive a locomotion allowance to ensure that employees who perform a critical function receive the support they deserve and that the increase is applied fairly, based on available funds.
I would like to thank the hard-working officials in Group Corporate and Shared Services who have done extensive research and auditing of all employee information to ensure that scarce public funds are allocated in a cost-effective manner with the aim of supporting our employees and maintaining high levels of service delivery across the City.
