Nelson Mandela Day is celebrated annually on 18 July with various good deeds being done for 67 minutes to honour and commemorate Madiba’s 67 years of active service.
The MMC for Health and Social Development in the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Ashley Sauls l, and Executive Mayor Cllr Mpho Phalatse attended A Re Sebetseng, a city-wide programme to ensure a cleaner, safer Joburg, which took place on Monday 18 July, in Lenasia.
MMC Sauls I urged residents to commit to becoming agents of change in their neighbourhoods and provide the government with the insights it needs that suit their particular circumstances.
He was happy to note the amount of awareness that was being raised through various organisations along with the contributions of the City. It was wonderful to see how many organisations reside within Lenasia, such as the Johannesburg Institute of Social Services and the Gauteng Provincial Association for Persons with Disabilities. The awareness campaigns were there to help in achieving the theme for this year of “do what you can, with what you have, where you are”.
MMC Sauls I also visited the Nirvana Heaven Housing Scheme for senior citizens and assisted in helping our most vulnerable. As a tribute to Madiba, cake was cut while other activities such as planting indigenous trees and promoting backyard gardens were undertaken.
He also took to the streets of Lenasia to establish how our Social Development Department can help assist. Explaining the objectives of the Social Development Department, the MMC highlighted that old age homes will soon be moving from the portfolio of the MMC for Housing to the portfolio of Social Development. The MMC is really looking forward to strategically assisting older persons with comprehensive services. The MMC reiterated that a city must look after its elderly.
