The MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (MMC: EISD) Cllr Michael Sun has committed to tackling various issues such as constant water and electricity outages affecting many residents in several areas.

One of the problems experienced by residents of Fourways and surrounding areas is frequent water cuts.

“We have locked sights on this and are pleased to announce that the water project, which aims to eliminate the water woes within the area, is nearing completion. We have received reports from Johannesburg Water, who indicated that the Fourways area has been plagued service disruptions due to recurring burst pipes,” said MMC Sun.

The effects of ageing infrastructure affected the area negatively in the past with frequent incidents of lengthy water cuts and low pressure on their taps.

Johannesburg Water initiated a project for the refurbishment of the existing “Pressure Reducing Valves” in Robin Drive, Fourways, and an emergency pipe replacement, which will include the replacement of pipes equivalent to seven kilometres.

This includes the replacement of the downstream water pipes with associated fittings to remedy against the challenges of water services experienced in the area. The value of this project is estimated to be R8.5million.

The project contractor was appointed on condition that 30% of the construction activities be sub-contracted to local community members, with key focus placed on skills transfer. Five SMMEs were appointed on the project, which created 11 work opportunities for local labour.

“Despite delays and challenges in completing this project, we have received confirmation that the project is currently at 89% complete, and the anticipated completion date is now 15 March 2022.

“As the Environment Services and Infrastructure Department, we are committed to keeping the public informed of progress made as well as any challenges anticipated. We are working to getting the basics right, and we will continue to do so for our residents to ensure quality and timely service delivery,” said MMC Sun.
