The first annual Soweto Investment Conference officially kicked off yesterday, 12 May 2022, with hundreds of delegates and guests in attendance at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Soweto.
Taking place from 12 – 14 May 2022, the Soweto Investment Conference is a high-level destination development project initiated by Soweto Tourism and Business Development Association, together with strategic partners including the City of Johannesburg.
The aim of the conference is to attract local and international investors and stakeholders, who are interested in partnering towards creating and developing Soweto into an environment that is economically sustainable, business friendly, ecologically welcoming, connected to the globe - and most importantly - attractive to the local, regional, and the international tourist market.
“We must seize every opportunity to rebuild our economy in the process ensuring it is more competitive and adapted to the changes that the pandemic and technology have brought to the world. A greener, technology absorbing, and more jobs intensive economy is possible, says Councillor Nkululeko Mbundu, the MMC for Economic Development at the City of Johannesburg.
“We have been heavily impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic – our communities have suffered blows both in human and economic terms. Although economies around the world are recovering from the collapse in output after the widespread lockdowns, the road back from the pandemic will, in the words of the IMF, be long, uneven, and highly uncertain.
“We now have the hard task of restoring investor confidence in governance and that has been one of our priorities as an administration since coming into office. However, it’s encouraging to see that big business is regaining its trust in our ability as the Multiparty Government to get our house in order. We are thrilled to see investors expressing their confidence in our City once again. This will help us ensure that we attract and retain investment opportunities across the City,” said Mbundu.
The investment conference will end on Saturday, 14 May 2022, with a golf day at the Soweto Country Club.
