The Johannesburg Zoo’s Farmyard Day promises to bring a fun-filled two-day event with some 280 Grade 3 to 5 learners from less advantaged schools from Hillbrow and Soweto.
Through the Joburg Zoo’s social responsibility programme, the Masibambisane project, learners will be provided with transportation and free entrance into the zoo.
The Masibambisane drive forms part of the Joburg Zoo’s initiative to teach children from a young age of the importance of farm animals in our daily lives with an emphasis on the farm animals housed at the zoo.
Over the two days, on the 4th and 5th of November 2022, learners will be entertained with various educational activities: -
• A tour of the zoo family animals, focusing on species origin, habitat and a few other interesting facts
• Interactive displays – farmyard crossword puzzles, drawing boards, numbering and puzzles
• Sheep shearing demonstration and the process of where we get our wool from
• Cow milking and introduction to dairy cows and what we benefit from these animals
• Introduction to the process of ice cream making
• Display of the zoo’s farm animals' feed and their nutrition
• Life cycle of chicken
• How to make compost at home and lastly the zoo’s anti-litter campaign
Learners will enjoy activities while gaining better but fun learning opportunities and cultural heritage of farm animals, different breeds, the welfare and husbandry of farm animals.
As a treat, Douglesdale Dairy (Pty) Ltd will be sponsoring 240 x 250ml fresh milk and Amasi. Ola South Africa will donate vanilla cup ice-cream for learners.
