On Monday 10 October 2022, the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Councillor Sello Morero and his Mayoral Committee visited Eldorado Park on their first assignment after being officially sworn in at the Metro Civic Centre.

They met and engaged with local ward councillors, community leaders and some residents at the Eldorado Park Police Station. A few councillors and residents have been camping in a tent outside the police station for about 30 days to highlight the socio-economic issues in the area.

Eldorado Park has been plagued by the sale and use of drugs over several years but has recently experienced a spike including gun violence that has resulted in the death of 13 young people between August and October 2022.

Community leaders are also demanding the removal of the station commander whom they allege is uncooperative with little understanding of the situation.

The Mayor listened intently to different stakeholders including MEC for Public Safety Faith Mazibuko who was in attendance. MEC Mazibuko outlined a six-month intelligence driven plan to root out illicit drugs and illegal firearms, avail a team of detectives from the provincial office to revisit drug and gun related cases over the past five years, avail a forensics team to finalise outstanding ballistic and crime reports as well as deploy a Counter Unit to investigate corruption at station level.

Executive Mayor Morero gave a commitment to residents that the City would create employment opportunities from within the City over the next three months including discussions with business to provide training and development in the digital space and skilling in the motor industry.

He said that together with Province the City would immediately avail two ambulances dedicated to Eldorado Park to avoid delays, expedite housing allocations for Eldorado Park on the housing database including attending to outstanding service delivery issues.
