Today, the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety in the City of Joburg, Cllr David Tembe, was in Eldorado Park, to give a detailed account to concerned residents about the interventions by Public Safety to assist in both reducing and preventing crime in the area.

Tembe announced the deployment of 100 metro police officers whose sole focus will be to restore law and order in Eldorado Park. The officers will work alongside the Johannesburg Metro Police’s K9 unit, which has proven time and time again to be reliable and effective. In elevating the aspect of visible policing, JMPD will have a Metro Police Nyala armoured vehicle stationed 24/7 at a strategic point to serve as a deterrent for criminal behaviour.

A specialised undercover unit will also form part of the deployment. That way, those reigning terror on the streets of Eldorado Park will be oblivious to the law enforcers right on their heels. These officers will act as agents of information, able to quickly contain and eliminate potential threats.

Public Safety will also initiate a 22, 44 and 88-point system. This operation will see roadside checks happen simultaneously at identified hotspots at any given time. This is a method of policing that makes it difficult for illegality to run rampant. People of Eldorado Park deserve that much.

In a bid to further drive enforcement, the JMPD will launch smart roadblocks using automatic number plate recognition technology to uncover unpaid transgressions by road users. A mobile station is used to conduct these roadblocks.

The City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Services will also join in the efforts to advance safety and security in Eldorado Park. With political direction from MMC Tembe, EMS will spend time checking non-compliant buildings, and create awareness and education on fire prevention.

Eldorado Park, and by extension Region G, can expect the highest levels of by-law enforcement, traffic management and crime prevention. These interventions will take place for three months, to later be reviewed to measure Public Safety’s efforts.

The coalition government, under the leadership of Executive Mayor Cllr Mpho Phalatse, has always maintained its commitment to making Johannesburg a safe and clean city. Restoring the shine in Joburg requires a team that puts the interests of communities first. A team that works day and night to ensure that communities like that of Eldorado Park get the best possible services.

“Making a difference in Eldorado requires a multi-disciplinary approach. Working together with other MMCs, we will ensure that we work on innovative strategies that will breathe life back into the troubled community. Improving the quality of life for all is a responsibility we don’t take lightly,” said Tembe.

It’s unacceptable that community members are catching stray bullets. It’s also unacceptable that drugs continue to destroy the lives of young people. It’s high time that criminals, drunk drivers, and other law breakers feel the wrath of the Metro Police. Public Safety will work hand in hand with community members, SAPS, councillors and other relevant stake holders to ensure that the rule of law is upheld, and that the people of Eldorado Park feel safe again. We cannot do it alone.

Ends.
