During the last three financial years, Metrobus has maintained an almost clean record in relation to safety on the road.
During this time the entity operated a total of 16 million kilometers without any serious injury or fatality. The entity measures its performance in this regard every quarter and is contracted with the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality to maintain zero fatality in its operations.
Unfortunately, during the afternoon of 8 February one of Metrobus buses traveling along Edevale Road en- route to Ghandi Square in the Johannesburg CBD collided with a truck. Fifty-Three (53) passengers including the driver of the bus sustained injuries. At this point, no fatalities resulting from this unfortunate occurrence have been reported.
I have instructed Metrobus to conduct a thorough investigation of the accident and to ensure that all affected commuters as well as the drivers are afforded all the support that they may require. More information will be shared following investigations.
I wish all those who have been injured in this accident a speedy recovery.
I want to thank the honorable Mayor of Johannesburg, Councillor. Thapelo Amad for his support and encouragement of emergency personnel on the scene, and concern for all affected. My gratitude goes to the emergency services of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan for their swift and professional response and assistance.
I also want to thank the management of Metrobus for the manner in which they supported all affected including the prompt transportation of all uninjured passengers to their respective destinations.
My office remains committed to ensuring safe public transportation in Johannesburg and will continue to ensure that commuters can rely on Metrobus for provision of safe, efficient, and cost-effective public transport services.
