Today, 20 January 2023, the City of Johannesburg in collaboration with the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition held the very first City of Johannesburg Construction Permit Management System (CPMS) Award Ceremony to commemorate the outstanding achievement of developing a web-based construction permit system in the city.

The ceremony saw the city give recognition and praise to staff in the Department of Development Planning who have worked with the CPMS. The hard work of the staff saw the Department fast track the process of submitting and processing building plan approvals from 30 days to 3 days, for commercial plans as well as residential plans.

The MMC for Development Planning, Cllr Belinda Echeozonjoku remarked at the event that, the CPMS provided the Department as well as the city with an ideal opportunity to digitally migrate away from a paper-based system of record keeping to a more efficient means of recording and sharing information and administrative processes needed in a Smart City.

“As a department we have made major strides in the fast-tracking of building plans across the whole city, especially in previously disadvantaged areas, through the CPMS.  I am proud that the Development Planning team, through the visionary and financial support of our sponsors, is now meeting its goal of processing plans in 3 days”, said Cllr Echeozonjoku.

Cllr Echeozonjoku further reiterated the Mayoral Priorities of the Executive Mayor, Dr Mpho Phalatse of a well-run, inclusive, caring and business friendly city, stating that the city must recognise the relevance and importance of making it easier for the development industry and property owners to do business, provide services, and create much needed jobs within the sector for those wanting to be part of the value chain.
