The City is sad to learn of the passing of Dingaan Thobela, the renowned South African boxer affectionately known as “The Rose of Soweto”.
Thobela, a former world champion in two weight classes, passed away on 29 April 2024 at the age of 57. His contribution to boxing has left an indelible mark across the nation and around the globe.
He was not only a champion in the ring but also a voice of reason and integrity within the sporting community. He passionately defended the noble art of boxing against the encroachments of other combat sports and entertainment spectacles, underscoring the discipline and dedication required to excel in the sport.
As we mourn the loss of this exceptional athlete and revered public figure, our thoughts are with his family, friends, and legions of fans. His demise is not only a loss to his loved ones but also to the sporting world, which he greatly enriched with his skill, spirit, and sportsmanship.
